The National Monument (also known as Monas, short for Monumen Nasional) is the city’s iconic landmark, symbolising Indonesia’s fight for independence. A 132-metre tower topped with a gold-coated flame rises from a square base housing the National History Museum. Monas, which opened to the public in 1975, houses Indonesia’s Proclamation of Independence text and dozens of dioramas of important scenes from the country’s history. Don’t leave without catching an elevator to the observation deck at the top of the monument to see the Jakarta skyline.
